Margaret I. Maire

Margaret I. Maire, 78, Crystal Lake, formerly of Woodstock, died Tuesday, March 31, 2015, at The Fountains, Crystal Lake, with her family by her side. She was born April 13, 1936, to David and Loretta (Schoonover) Metcalf in New Auburn, Wis. Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Thomas Maire; four sons, Paul Maire, Bloomer, Wis., David Maire, Crystal Lake, Robert (Cynthia) Maire, Woodstock, and Thomas (Kathy) Maire, Bellville, Wis.; four grandchildren, Jenna Maire, Cally Maire, Noelle Maire and Caden Maire; three sisters, Janice Schimmel, Elaine (Ron Shields) Stuckert, Susan (Gary) Nehring; three brothers, Edward (Sandra) Metcalf, Bruce (Pat) Metcalf and Stephen Metcalf; and many nieces and nephews. Gary W. Reed

Gary W. Reed, 67, of Kailua, Hawaii, formerly of Woodstock, died Saturday, March 28, 2015, at Kailua Hospital with his wife by his side. All arrangements are pending. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Frances B. Sugden

Frances B. Sugden, Woodstock, formerly of Wilmette and Winnetka, died Thursday, March 26, 2015, in Woodstock.   She was born Ida Frances Bourland June 8, 1923, to Frederick Bailey and Rachel (Mitchel) Bourland in Peoria.   During her high school years, the family moved to Wilmette.  She attended New Trier High School, followed by Northwestern University, where she earned her undergraduate degree in speech science.  She followed with master’s degrees in speech science and deaf education, as well as a Fellowship for a master’s degree in audiology. In 1946, she began teaching special education at Evanston High School, where she met Henry H. Sugden II.  They were married June 12, 1948, in Peoria.   After the birth of her three

Joan C. Lowe

Joan C. Lowe, 85, Woodstock, died Sunday, March 29, 2015, at Valley Hi Nursing Home surrounded by her loving family. She was born Sept. 2, 1929, to Oscar and Marion (Curtis) Anderson, in Chicago.   On June 5, 1954, she married Frank Lowe. Survivors include a son, Trace Lowe; two daughters, Kathryn (Mike) Nelson and Janice Kee; a step-son, Steven Schrodt; five grandchildren, Allison Grice, Daniel Kee, Eric Kee, Lauren Kee and Matthew Nelson; two great-grandchildren, Autumn Gorecki and Ayden Grice; and a sister, Joyce Anderson. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and eight brothers and sisters. All services will be private. Memorials can be made to JourneyCare Hospice, 405 N. Virgil R. Smith

Virgil R. Smith, 90, Woodstock, died Sunday, March 22, 2015, at Valley Hi Nursing Home.  He was born June 30, 1924, to George D. and Myrtle E. (Ebinger) Smith in Aurora. On Sept. 17, 1949, he married Jean Ann Trego, in Mt. Vernon, Iowa. He grew up on his parent’s dairy farm in Oswego and graduated from East Aurora High School. He served in the U.S. Navy Air Corps from Nov. 19, 1943, to Sept. 28, 1945, and he earned a bachelor’s degree from Cornell College in 1949. Edward G. Kipple

Edward G. Kipple, 83, Woodstock, died Sunday, March 22, 2015, at Centegra Hospital – Woodstock. He was born Feb. 24, 1932, to Edward F. and Clara (Glover) Kipple in Oak Park. In 1950 he graduated from Lutheran Institute High School in Chicago. He was employed at Paraplegics Manufacturing Co. for 17 years before moving to rural McHenry County in 1968.  He then worked for Oak Industries in Crystal Lake for 17-1/2 years as a printing operator and mail clerk before retiring in 1987. Fernanda C. Gosser

Fernanda C. Gosser, 94, Woodstock, died Monday, March 23, 2015, at Valley Hi Nursing Home, Woodstock. She was born April 13, 1920, to Luigi and Emma (Rossi) Settimini in Rome, Italy.  On Oct. 27, 1945, she married Francis A. Gosser in Rome at St. Peter’s Basillica. She was a devoted wife and mother. Her job as a homemaker was her passion. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and was a loved member of the Mama Mia Club. Survivors include a son, Francis (Colleen) Gosser; four daughters, Maria Celeste Welch, Barbara Ann (Charles) Pioli, Mary Catherine Baribeau and Esther Maria (Peter) Voss; 10 grandchildren, Jeremy, Wesley, Alex, Adam, Cristina, Katherine, Hannah, Aaron, Michelle and Kaitlin; and four great-grandchildren.

Gloria H. Loy

Gloria H. Loy, 88, Crystal Lake, died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2015, at JourneyCare Hospice Center, Woodstock. She was born June 7, 1926, to Frank and Hazel (Larson) Merrick in Chicago. On June 8, 1946, she married Edward Loy. She was a member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, Algonquin.  She enjoyed bowling, golfing and babysitting for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  She also enjoyed traveling. Survivors include two daughters, Kathy (Terry) Stanger, Woodstock, and Claudia (Scott) Larsen, Dundee; four grandchildren, Erik Larsen, Jennifer (Mark) Smith, Beau (Richard) Nowicki and Dirk (Kelly) Stanger; 11 great-grandchildren, Mykela, Colette and Kylie Nowicki, Peyton, Carter and Grant Larsen, Braeden and Hailey Smith, and Madison, Myles and Emerson Stanger; a close niece and nephew, Gail Walsh

Walter “Butch” Barry

Walter “Butch” Barry, 64, Harvard, died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2015, at JourneyCare Hospice Center, Woodstock. He was born Feb. 23, 1950, to Charles and Elizabeth (Tracy) Barry in Woodstock. On Oct. 21, 1967, he married Doris Nell in Woodstock. He was a member of the Saddlebag Saloon.  He enjoyed motorcycle riding, fishing and music.  He was proud of his Native American heritage. As a descendant of the Mesquakie Tribe, Native American culture and lore fascinated him.  Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his loving family and dear friends. Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Robin (Richard) Knapik, Lynette (Timothy) Ashmore and Dawn VanHoorn; four grandchildren, Mike (Kelly) Knapik, Brittany Knapik, Tayler Barry and Travis Price; a great-grandson, Konner

Loretta L. Judson

Loretta L. Judson, 77, Woodstock, died Friday, Feb. 20, 2015, at her home in Woodstock surrounded by her loving family. She was born Sept. 17, 1937, in Tiskilwa, to Lance E. and Elsie L. (Barker) Blackburn.  On Feb. 27, 1957, she married John J. “Jim” Judson at Greenwood Methodist Church. She was a deputy clerk at the McHenry County Clerk’s Office for many years.  She was a fabulous baker and cake decorator, making countless birthday cakes and wedding cakes for her children, grandchildren, other family members and close friends. She always was involved in family activities.  She enjoyed traveling with her husband, especially to Nashville, attending performances at the Grand Ole Opry.  She also enjoyed traveling to Disney World with
