Charles G. “Sam” Smith

Charles G. “Sam” Smith, 95, Woodstock, died Sunday, April 19, 2015, at home surrounded by family and loved ones. 

He was born Sept. 2, 1919, in Hebron, to Charles and Jennie (DenBesten) Smith, the seventh of eight siblings.

Sam served in the United States Army Air Forces in World War II in the Pacific. 

On July 5, 1947, he married Marie G. Scaran in Chicago. 

He was a longtime member of St. Mary Catholic Church. He was a school bus driver for Woodstock School District 200 until retirement. Skilled at working with wood, he handcrafted and painted ornamental birds for family and friends. He also excelled at bridge and pinochle.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Cynthia “Cindi” (Norman) Davern, California; a son, Charles “Jamie” Smith, Lake Geneva, Wis.; four grandsons, Michael Davern, Justin Davern, Andrew Davern and Aidan Smith; a great-granddaughter, Sawyer Davern; and many nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and three brothers.

Visitation will be held from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 22,  at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, 1211 N. Seminary Ave. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. April 22 at St. Mary Catholic Church, 312 Lincoln Ave. Burial will be at Linn-Hebron Cemetery.
