Charmaine J. (McReynolds) Hay

Charmaine J. (McReynolds) Hay, 73, died unexpectedly April 9, 2018, in Sun Lakes, Arizona. She was born in Chicago May 30, 1944, the daughter of Ralph McReynolds and Evelyn (Hoelterhoff) McReynolds. Charm was a 1962 graduate of Woodstock High School, but also attended McHenry High School. She attended both schools’ class reunions as a testament to her social involvement at the schools. Charm was married Oct. 9, 1964, to Larry O. Hay and raised their three daughters in a close-knit Wonder Lake neighborhood. They enjoyed motorcycling with friends in the Rain Riders Motorcycle Club. Ronald “Ron” Hammer

Ronald “Ron” Hammer

Ronald “Ron” Hammer, 60, died Sunday, April 15, 2018, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born Aug. 17, 1957, to Alvin and Dorothy Hammer. Ron worked at Charter Manufacturing in Woodstock and enjoyed classic cars, food, and spending time with family, including pets. Survivors include his wife, Kathleen; two daughters, Kandice Hammer Smith (Jake) and Rachel Hammer; siblings and in-laws, Debbie Belmonte, Linda Koenig, Patty Jankowski (Rich), Marcia Epley (Jim), and David and Gina Cholewinski; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Services were private. Memorials may be made to Journey Care Center in Woodstock, journeycare.org.

Roger Allan Whiting

Roger Allan Whiting

Roger Allan Whiting, 84, Woodstock, Wednesday, April 18, 2018, in his home. He was born May 4, 1933, to Roger A. and Wanda (Chin) Whiting Sr. in Woodstock. On Nov. 25, 1965,  he married Yvonne A. Cox in McHenry. He served in the Army from 1953 to 1956. After the service, he started to work at Union Special in Huntley, where he was employed his entire career. He loved bowling, gardening, games of all sorts, and especially family pizza parties, where he was the pizza maker. He enjoyed traveling and introduced his family to many adventures from Yellowstone to Mount Rushmore to the Statue of Liberty, as well as the Smithsonian and the beaches of Florida. Evelyn Steinke

Evelyn Steinke, 99, of Woodstock, died Wednesday April 18, 2018, at Hearthstone Manor in Woodstock. She was born June 7, 1918, to Fred and Willie (Harris) Fincannon in Murphy, Oklahoma. She married Bruce Steinke in Pawhuska, Oklahoma. She was a homemaker who enjoyed sewing, quilting and reading. She was a member of First Baptist Church and Calvary Baptist Church, both of Woodstock. She was preceded in death by her husband after 71 years of marriage. She is survived by a daughter, Julie Fee of Woodstock; a son, Terry of Vallejo, California; and several nieces and nephews. Jerome L. “Jerry” Riley

Jerome L. “Jerry” Riley, 91, Woodstock, died Friday, April 20, 2018, at JourneyCare Hospice in Woodstock. He was born Nov. 17, 1926, in Ferndale, Michigan, to William H. and Clara Eve (Cardinal) Riley.  He married Patricia J. Dittman Sept. 15, 1951, in Woodstock. Jerry was a veteran serving in the U.S. Army, having seen service with HQ 9th Troop Reg GP from 1945 to 1947. He had worked for the family business of Riley and Riley Mobil from 1950 to 1972. In 1972, he went to work at the other family business, Dittman Plumbing & Heating, until he retired in 1991. He was a charter member and unit rep for Woodstock Boy Scouts Troop 776. John David Mason

John David Mason

John David Mason, 44, Crystal Lake, died Thursday April 12, 2018. He was born Oct. 29, 1975, in Wooster, Ohio, and moved to Woodstock with his family in 1989. After graduating from Woodstock High School in 1994, he attended Winona State University, where he met the love of his life, Michelle. He graduated from Winona State University in 1998 with a degree in criminal justice. On July 28, 2001, John and Michelle were married, and on June 4, 2007, they welcomed their twins, Natalie Christine and Zachary David. John received a teaching degree in 2003 and began work at Prairie Ridge High School, Crystal Lake, where he taught U.S. history, sociology and law.  A sports fanatic, he took up coaching

Ronald A. Hammer, 60, Woodstock, died April 15, 2018, after a battle with cancer. He was the son of the late Alvin and Dorothy Hammer. He enjoyed working at Charter Manufacturing in Woodstock. He also enjoyed classic cars, food, and spending time with his family, including pets. Survivors include his wife, Kathleen; two daughters, Kandice (Jacob) and Rachel; and many other family members. Chester R. Grubba

Chester R. Grubba, 88, Woodstock, died Sunday, April 15, 2018, at his home. He was born July 31, 1929, to Nick and Rose (Poterek) Grubba in Chicago. On May 4, 1952, he married Dorothy M. Mika in Chicago. She died March 13, 2015. Survivors include a son, Kenneth (Pamela) Grubba; two daughters, Rosemary (Gary) Pope and Joyce Dalton; grandchildren, Brian (Tina), Branden (Heather), Jonathan, Carrie (Steven), Jason (Kate), Heather (Ray), Jessica (Erik), Ryan, Kelly (Willie III), and Courtney; great-grandchildren, Ethan, Malaina, Megan, Madalyn, Macie, Hayden, Jackson, Caroline, Cameron, Brianna, Danny, Xavier, Willie IV, and twins due the end of May; and many nieces and nephews. Paul Leland Cornue

Paul Leland Cornue, 72, Lake Geneva, died Wednesday, April 18, 2018, following a long bout with cancer. He was born October 4, 1945, to Stanley Huntington and Meta Adele (Felbeck) Cornue in Harvard. Paul grew up in Hebron and graduated from Alden-Hebron High School in 1963.  Following four years at the University of Illinois, he served three years in the U.S. Army including one year in Vietnam as a combat veteran. After Paul was discharged from the Army, he returned to the University of Illinois, where he earned a Master of Business Administration degree. Using his education, he spent his working life in computer programming and information technology.  He was an active scuba diver and was involved in the discovery

Donna L. Strain, 91, died peacefully April 12, 2018, after a brief illness. She was born Dec. 10, 1926, to Thomas and Fern (Miller) Boyd in Bryant, South Dakota. On April 22, 1949, she married James H. Strain in Huron, South Dakota. Donna and James owned and operated the Pantry Delicatessen for over 26 years. She also worked for many years as a cosmetologistesthetician at the House of Hair in Woodstock. Survivors include two sons, Charles (Carol) Strain, Henderson, Nevada, and Douglas Strain, McHenry; three daughters, Kathryn (John) Cole, Marsha Giles, Woodstock, and Rosemary McKay, Noblesville, Indiana; two grandchildren, Elizabeth (Zoran) Cetusic and Erin (Brian) Benak both of Indiana; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
