Truck fire closes Route 47 two hours north of Woodstock

Route 47 was closed in both directions for two hours Thursday afternoon when a southbound semitrailer hauling salt caught fire at Charles Road, north of Woodstock. The male driver was uninjured in the fire that he reported to 911 shortly after 2 p.m. He safely pulled over and attempted to extinguish the rapidly spreading fire but was unsuccessful. When firefighters from the Woodstock Fire/Rescue District arrived within 5 minutes, they found a fully engulfed truck along the road just south of the intersection. The fire was extinguished within 10 minutes, according to a news release..The fire is believed to have begun in the engine compartment, but the cause was undetermined. The highway was closed to allow for fire operations, cleanup of the scene, and removal of the vehicle. McHenry County Sheriff’s deputies assisted with traffic control and operations at the scene. (Photo courtesy of WFRD.)
