Dennis Terrell Nix, 73

Dennis Terrell Nix, age 73, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2019. Denny was born March 9, 1946, in Waukegan, Ill., the son of Emily Mary (née Urcikan) and Charles Terrell Nix. As the courageous soldier he was, he bravely fought the effects of Agent Orange since returning from Vietnam in 1970 and succumbed to the disease on Saturday, Oct. 5. He was a graduate of Langley military intelligence school and the Army foreign language school, fluent in Vietnamese. Denny also served as a lieutenant in the Illinois National Guard, heading the intelligence unit at O’Hare Airport. Denny leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and a life well lived with his family and friends: wife, Cheryl (McCracken) Nix; children

Albert F. Rhino, 91

Albert “Al” F. Rhino, 91, died Sept. 26, 2019, at JourneyCare Hospice in Barrington, Ill. He was born on Oct. 18, 1927, to Albert C. and Irene A. Rhino in Chicago. He graduated from Stienmetz High School in 1945. While there, he entered ROTC and attained the rank of cadet staff sergeant.  He served with the U.S. Army from February 1946 to March 1947, serving in occupied Japan with the 8th Army. After the service, he attended American Television School. On June 9, 1950, Al married Marilyn “Mim” A. Dahl in Chicago. They had three children, Denise, Debbi, and Albert. During Al’s working career, he had been a machinist, draftsman, engineer, cabinet maker, designer, fabricator, and rural route mail carrier.

Charlene Rae Landers, 77

On Sept. 26, 2019, Charlene Rae Landers (List) passed away at the age of 77, surrounded by her family. Born on Oct. 12, 1941, Char was better known by her loved ones as “Nonnie,” a moniker that became synonymous with her kind heart, selfless nature, and love and devotion to her friends and family. She leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and loyalty that will continue to live on through her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, a family that she loved and cared for above and beyond anything else in the world, and all of whom will never forget her exuberance. She is survived by her brothers, Terry (Martha), Edwin (Carol), and Chalmer; her children, Edward (Christine) Landers, Debra (Brian)

Baltus ‘Bill’ Wilhelm Ortmann, 84

Baltus “Bill” Wilhelm Ortmann passed away at Journey Care in Woodstock, Ill., on Sept. 19, 2019, at the age of 84. Per his request, no service will be held at this time. Bill was born July 31, 1935, in Johannisburg, Germany, and has two sisters. Bill migrated to the United States to live with his late Aunt Rose at the age of 19. He attended night classes at Fenger High School in Chicago for two years to learn English while working at the Drake Hotel as an assistant chef. He became a citizen of the United States and was very proud of his citizenship. He met his late wife, Hilda, in a dance hall and they soon married and had

James E. Berner, 88

James E Berner, a lifelong resident of Woodstock, Ill., departed this earth for eternal life early Saturday morning, Sept. 21, 2019. He died peacefully in his sleep at the young age of 88, having entered life on Dec. 29, 1930. He is the oldest child of Pia and Joe Berner. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Edith; two sons, Jim (Thomasina) and Bill (Ginny) Berner; along with four grandchildren, Maverick, Audrey, Irene and Maximus. He is survived by three sisters, Patricia Stilling, Mary Jean Goulet, and JoAnn (Ralph) Larsen, along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Richard; brothers-in-law, Roger Stilling, Don Huff and Larry Goulet; and a nephew, Steven Stilling.

Robert “Dutch” Steinwehe, 89

Robert W. “Dutch” Steinwehe, 89, of Woodstock, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2019, at his home in Woodstock. He was born Feb. 15, 1930, in Woodstock to Albert F. and Ida (Lange) Steinwehe Sr. He married Elaine L. Stieg on Sept. 24, 1955, in Woodstock. Dutch was a lifelong resident of Woodstock and a longtime member of Grace Lutheran Church. He worked as a tool and die maker by trade for 48 years. He was an ever-faithful fan of the Chicago Bears and Cubs. He was a proud veteran of the Korean War. Following the stock market and morning coffee with the “McDonald Boys” kept him busy during retirement. His devotion to family and friends will be dearly missed.

Lynn Morton Pensinger, 81

Lynn Morton Pensinger, 81, of Woodstock, Ill., died peacefully on Sept. 1, 2019, at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. A visitation will be held on Friday, Sept. 13, from 4-7 p.m. at Davenport Family Funeral Home, 419 E. Terra Cotta Ave. (Route 176), Crystal Lake, and a memorial service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 14, at 10 a.m. at First Congregational Church, 461 Pierson St., Crystal Lake. She is survived by her husband, Ray; two children, Matthew (Wendy Day) of Chicago and Ashley (David Sok) of Chicago; four grandchildren, Mia Pensinger-Sok (10), Henry Pensinger (9), Alex Pensinger (9) and Leo Pensinger-Sok (7); and her sister, Mary Roeder, of Lexington, Mass. Elizabeth L. “Beth” Messman, 52

Elizabeth L. “Beth” Messman, 52, of Woodstock, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2019, at her home. She was born in Woodstock on Jan. 23, 1967, to Marion and Grace (Thompson) Messman. That was the same day as the blizzard in 1967. Beth was a graduate of Woodstock Community High School. She was inducted into the high school Hall of Fame as a member of the volleyball class of 1985. She worked for many years at Woodstock Auto Body. She enjoyed making bracelets to support multiple myeloma. Beth fought multiple myeloma as well as other illness for over 18 years. She was a fighter, and will be missed. She is survived by her two children, Gary Fike and Kaitlin (Edward

John I. Rowe Jr., 75

John I. Rowe Jr. age 75, passed away Sunday, Aug. 25, 2019, at his home with his loving family by his side. He was born on Sept. 12, 1943, in Chicago to John and Darline (Colton) Rowe. He married Patricia Worm on Nov. 18, 1983. John’s lifelong passion was training, racing and working with horses. He was involved in the 4-H program, where he would teach kids how to ride, show, and train. He also served as a show Judge. He enjoyed racing his own horses at Arlington Park, Belmoral Park, and Hawthorne Race Track. John was also a fan of western movies, and the Chicago Bears. John is survived by his wife; children, Scott (Jennifer) Rowe, Kimberly (Adam) Shumpert

William K. Hahn, 94

William K. Hahn, 94, of Woodstock, was called home to be forever with his Lord on Aug. 17, 2019, in McHenry with his family by his side. Bill was born in Union, Ill., on May 21, 1925, to William F. and Clara J. (Wilkins) Hahn. He married Helga Bluemel on July 9, 1954. During most of his working years he was the foreman at the old Guardian Electric, that used to be located at the corner of Lake Avenue and Route 47, retiring in 1991. He was a decades-long member of St John’s Lutheran Church, in Union. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Helga; his daughter, Karen; his son, Christopher; two grandsons, Frank Bowman and John Bowman;
