Larry (Smitty) Smith, 71

Larry (Smitty) Smith, 71, of Woodstock, IL passed away in Rochester, MN, on May 14th, 2025, surrounded by his family.

Larry was born in Harvard, IL, on January 31, 1954 to Marion and Betty Smith. He attended Woodstock schools and was a member of Woodstock High School Class of 1972. Larry was a Woodstock United States Postal Service letter carrier for 30 years.

On May 14, 1977 he married Peggy Dhom at Saint Mary’s Church. They raised four children together. Larry is survived by his wife Peggy, son Scott (Jessica) Smith, daughter Sarah (Dave) Kanak, daughter Lindsay (Todd) Loehner, daughter Lauren (Seth) Hoadley, sister Marilyn (David) Rice, brother Ken (Kristy) Smith, many cousins, nieces, nephews, and good friends. Larry was “Boppa” to Jane, Jack and Kate Hoadley, Kelly, Elin, Luca, and Greta Loehner, and Maura and Ian Kanak. Grandchild #10 is due in September.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents Marion and Betty Smith, sister Maureen Spoerlein, father-in-law Larry C Dhom, mother-in-law Shirley Dhom, brother-in-law Larry E. Dhom, sister-in-law Peggy L. Dhom, brother-in-law Michael Godwin and sister-in-law Patty Dhom.

He was a Cubs and Bears fan which wasn’t always easy. Larry enjoyed gardening, researching ancestry and genealogy, traveling to National Parks and Civil War Battlefields, watching Westerns and some good chocolate.

His family was very important to him and he will forever be greatly missed by all of them. They would like to thank the numerous doctors and nurses at Mayo Clinic who treated Larry with such kindness and compassion.

A Memorial Gathering will be held on Thursday, May 22, 2025 at the Schneider Leucht Merwin Cooney Funeral Home, 1211 N. Seminary Ave., Woodstock from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. A Celebration of Life will be held from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm at D.C. Cobb’s, 226 Main Street, Woodstock, IL.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society or a tree may be planted in his memory
