Thomas R. Matterness, 90

Thomas R. Matterness, age 90, passed away peacefully at home in Woodstock on June 17, 2022.

Tom was born in Spring City, Pa., on Feb. 14, 1932, the son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Biehl) Matterness. After graduating from Lebanon Valley High School in 1950, he enlisted in the Navy for 4 years, where he attended Great Lakes Naval Academy. Tom met Sondra in July of 1958; they were engaged on Christmas of 1958, and married in Everett, Pa., on May 23, 1959.

Tom took great pride in his career, working for General Electric as a field engineer, then Motorola for 30 years where he retired in 1993 as vice president and national service manager. He was a longtime member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, and was active throughout his life in the Elks Lodge and the American Legion.

After his retirement, he and Sondra enjoyed spending time with their grandchildren, winters in Arizona, and playing cards with friends and family. He also enjoyed morning coffee with friends and belonged to a group called the Enterprise Club.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Gene B. Matterness. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Sondra L. (Boyer) Matterness; his daughter, Beth (John) Morrison of Skokie, Ill.; his daughter, Katrina (Rich) Meyer Kurowski, of Spring Grove, Ill.; and his grandchildren, Alicia Meyer, Sara Morrison, Devin Meyer, and Trent Meyer.

A memorial service will be held on Aug. 13 at St Paul’s United Church of Christ, 485 Woodstock St., Crystal Lake. Visitation will be at 9:30 a.m., with a service at 11 a.m., followed by interment in the columbarium at St. Paul’s.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Glaucoma Research Foundation, 251 Post St., Suite 600, San Francisco CA 94108 (415-986-3162); Journey Care Hospice, 405 N.
