Thomas D. Cooney

Thomas D. Cooney, 94, Woodstock,  died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018, in Woodstock, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born July 6, 1923, to Herbert T. and Mary E. (Hurley) Cooney in Woodstock.

On May 26, 1951, he married Irene S. Shereda in Woodstock. Irene died June 20, 1992.  On Feb. 6, 1997, he married Jane Conerty.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II.  After the war, he returned to Woodstock where he worked in finance for several organizations.  He went to work for the McHenry County Title Company / Chicago Title in 1959.  During his 27-year career there he worked in several capacities until being elected president in 1979.  He retired in 1986.

He was very active in the community, volunteering with many organizations.  He was a past president of the Easter Seal Society of McHenry County; served on the St. Mary School Board; coached basketball, a sport he excelled in, for St. Mary School for 10 years; donated his time to the Woodstock Food Pantry, Food For The Poor and PADS; and was a strong advocate for the Right To Life.  He was a life member of St. Mary Catholic Church; and was a member and past Grand Knight of the Woodstock Knights of Columbus.  He was an avid golfer and enjoyed spending the winter months in Green Valley, Arizona.

Survivors include his wife, Jane Cooney; children, Megan (Robert) Nelson, Rockford, and David Cooney, Los Angeles; grandchildren, Tommy (Kayln) Nelson and Christina (Fanio) Nelson; great-grandchildren, Isaiah, Andrew, Elizabeth, Noah and Nya; his Conerty family, Mary (Al) Stilling, Patricia (Terry) Clarke, John (Kate) Conerty and Marty Conerty, and their children and grandchildren; a  sister-in-law, Mary Shereda; and many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and -nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; brothers and sisters-in-law, Judge James H. and Karlen Cooney, Leo F. and Jean Cooney, Donald J. and Beatrice Cooney; a grandson, Timmy Nelson; and Clare Conerty and Mark Conerty.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, at Schneider, Leucht, Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, 1211 N. Seminary Ave., Woodstock.  The visitation will continue at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 16, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 312 Lincoln Ave., Woodstock, until the funeral Mass at 11 a.m.  Interment will follow in Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Woodstock.
