After a long and courageous battle with cancer, Susan “Susie Q” Morton, 42, passed away on June 21, 2025, in McHenry surrounded by her family and friends. Born Aug. 25, 1982, in Plymouth, Wis., Susie’s vibrant soul always had a zest for life, captivating so many hearts with the simplest of smiles.
Susie was the beloved daughter of Mary and Leonard (Judy), and the adored sister of Kevin, Sarah (Ernesto), Amanda Hemmrich (Kyle), and Brittney Rortvedt (Jake). She was the doting aunt of Ethan and Elsa Schuette and Lilyana and Jackson Hemmrich. She was also the niece of Tom and Ruth Reiss (John). There is nothing that Susie wouldn’t have done for her family as this unit was the cornerstone of her life. She supported each member unconditionally with an ever present and palpable love. Her affection continues on as she reunites with not only her grandparents, James and Apollonia Morton and Eugene and Joan Schoenecker, but her loyal dog, Knox, who is eagerly wagging his tail with a ball in his mouth, waiting for Susie’s next throw.
An athlete through and through, Susie excelled in softball, capturing All-Conference and All-State honors (1997-2000) and earning her place on Plymouth High School Softball’s Inaugural Wall of Fame (2015). When she could no longer play, she turned to coaching, inspiring a new generation with her enthusiasm for the game. Susie’s adventurous spirit and love for the outdoors led her to her affinity for biking. For many years, she proudly participated in the Dempsey Challenge, a national cancer care and support fundraising event. She cycled with hope, determination, and joy.
Be it the picturesque coastline of Maine, the serene shores of Hawaii, the awe-inspiring mountains in Colorado, admiring the pristine championship banners and pennants at Turner Field in Atlanta, Ga., or cheering her heart out in the historic Frozen Tundra at Lambeau Field, traveling was more than a hobby for Susie; it was a way of embracing the beauty and diversity of the world, creating memories that she deeply treasured.
Susie struggled with illness for the majority of her life, and a genuine thank you goes out to all who cared for her along the way. A special acknowledgment must be given to Doctor Desai and his wonderful staff for their unwavering support and care throughout her journey.
Susie’s devotion and selflessness knew no bounds. She had an immense love for her dogs, Arthur and Thor, who were her constant companions and sources of comfort. She was a committed and hard worker at Walmart for 21 years, looking to pick up shifts even during treatments. She participated in numerous fundraising events, always eager to lend a helping hand to others in need. She had a true appreciation for the connection to people from all walks of life.
Susie battled her lifelong cancer with bravery and grace. Her never-back-down attitude was nothing short of inspirational, and her courage left a lasting impression on everyone she met. She remained passionate, generous, and kind even on her worst days.
Susie’s life was a testament to the power of love, the strength of resilience, and the beauty of compassion. She will be profoundly missed but forever remembered by her loving family, her amazing group of friends, and all who were fortunate enough to be touched by her warm, charismatic, and extraordinary presence.
Her legacy lives on as one of love, kindness, and the joy she brought to others.
In honor of Susie’s wishes, a private celebration of life will be held at a later date. Donations may be made in Susie’s name to the Dempsey Center at secure.qgiv.com/for/honor-memorial/
