Sophia Hoeft

Sophia M. Hoeft, 95, Naperville, died Friday, May 3, 2013, at Centegra Hospital-Woodstock.

She was born Nov. 25, 1917, in Monterey, Neb., to Herman and Josephine Kaup.

On March 2, 1946, she married Walter Hoeft in Chicago. They moved to Naperville in 1949. 

The youngest of 11 children, she attended St. Boniface Grade School and St. Angela’s Academy, Carroll, Iowa. She graduated from Creighton University, St. Joseph’s School of Nursing, in June 1939. She served the United States Public Health Department in multiple facilities around the country.

She worked as a registered nurse in the nursery at St. Charles Hospital, Aurora, and later worked as an industrial nurse at the Nabisco Plant, also in Aurora. She was a longtime parishioner of Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Naperville. She was a member of the Naperville Garden Club for 30 years and earned the title of master gardener.  

Survivors include four daughters, Marilyn (Richard) Swanson, Fennville, Mich.,  Joanne (Richard) Lind, Woodstock, Kathleen (Michael) Brechon, Rockford, and Carolyn (Lucio) Miele, Terry, Miss.; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 2007; six brothers, Charles, Fred, Herman, Joseph, Paul and John; and four sisters, Ella Kaup, Gertrude Klitz, Johanna Lennemann and Mary Ann Kaup. 

Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday, May 25, at St. Patrick’s Residence, 1400 Brookdale Road, Naperville.   

The funeral Mass will follow at 10 a.m. in the chapel at St. Patrick’s Residence.

Interment will be at Saints Peter & Paul Cemetery, Naperville.
