Matthew J. Stahl Sr., 86

Matthew J. Stahl, Sr., 86, of Woodstock passed away Aug. 8, 2021, surrounded by his family.

Matthew was born on July 16, 1935, to Matthew and Madeline Stahl in Kenosha, Wis. They moved to Waukegan and then to the family farm in Kenosha.

Matt went to St Mary grade school and Kenosha High School. He graduated in 1956 from the University of Notre Dame, where he received a degree in Civil Engineering. He married Patricia Silk on Nov. 26, 1960, in Kenosha Wis.

Upon graduation he joined the Army Reserves. His first engineering position was with the city of Racine. In February 1963, Matt moved his family to Woodstock, where he accepted a position of city engineer.

Matt completed his career with Great Lakes Naval Base, where he served as head of naval construction for the 9th Naval District, covering 14 states. He worked there until his retirement in 1995.

During his time in Woodstock, Matt built Stahl Engineering, where he did surveys, septics, subdivisions, and other engineering services. But his crowning achievement was his family. He loved his family dearly.

Matt is survived by his wife, Patricia Stahl; 14 children, Eleanor (Barry) Gullett, Matthew (Kimberly) Stahl, John (Margaret) Stahl, Linda (Mark) Grabbert, Mary (Mike) Flynn, Christopher Stahl, Thomas (Karolyn) Stahl, Andrea (Kenneth) Radcliffe, Robert Stahl, Madeline (Michael) Spitson, James (Kristie) Stahl, Melissa (Michael) Hernandez, Amanda (Nicholas) Hooper, and Megan (Adam) Bailey; 31 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren, with No. 10 on the way.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Elizabeth Stahl Pfeiffer.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, Aug. 12, 2021, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Schneider, Leucht Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, 1211 N. Seminary Ave., Woodstock. The visitation will continue on Friday, Aug. 13, 2021, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 312 Lincoln Ave., Woodstock, from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral Mass. Interment will follow in the Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Woodstock.
