Lawrence C. Dhom

Lawrence C. Dhom, 88, Woodstock, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014, at Centegra Hospital-Woodstock. 

He was born June 8, 1925, to Charles and Josephine (Loebmeier) Dhom in Newton. 

On Nov. 8, 1947, he married Shirley M. Salzman in Woodstock. 

He was a World War II veteran. As a U.S. Marine, he served in the Pacific Theater with the First Armored Amphibian Battalion. During his career, he operated Larry’s Shoe Service in Woodstock, worked many years at the Woodstock Die Cast Company and the Woodstock city water treatment plant.

He was a life member of the Woodstock VFW, a volunteer with the VFW Honor Guard, a past Grand Knight and member of the Woodstock Knights of Columbus and a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, backyard birdwatching, reading and spending time with his family. 

Survivors include three children, David C. (Maribeth) Dhom, Mary Godwin and Peggy (Larry) Smith, all of Woodstock; a daughter-in-law, Peggy Dhom; 15 grandchildren, Becky Dhom, Brian Dhom, Chris (Kara) Godwin, Emily (Aaron) Gay, Molly (Jake) Freely, Casey (Amy) Godwin, Scott Smith, Sarah (Dave) Kanak, Lindsay (Todd) Loehner, Lauren (Seth) Hoadley, Philip (Maggie) Dhom, Bridget (Chris) Phillips, Eric Dhom, Maggie (Nate) Selof and Clare Dhom; 15 great-grandchildren; a brother, Charles (Evelyn) Dhom; and a sister, Florence Mason.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in 2012; a daughter, Patricia J. Dhom; a son, Lawrence E. Dhom; a son-in-law, Michael Godwin; a brother, Vincent; and three sisters, Sally, Christine and Esther.

Visitation and a liturgical prayer service was held Feb. 9 at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home.  A Mass was held Feb. 10 at St. Mary Catholic Church. Interment was in Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Woodstock, with military honors provided by the Woodstock VFW. Memorials can be made to the Woodstock VFW or St. Mary Catholic Church.
