Kenneth Glenn Gabel

Kenneth Glenn Gabel, 90, McHenry, formerly of Wonder Lake, died Thursday, May 23, 2013, at Fox Point Manor, McHenry.

He was born Aug. 2, 1922, in Evanston to Harry A. and Lydia (Manthie) Gabel. 

On Sept. 6, 1947, he married Betty Jean Fiala.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps and served in the South Pacific during World War II. He received three Bronze Stars and the Asiatic Pacific Ribbon, and he  had achieved the rank of corporal at the time of his discharge.

He was a resident of Wonder Lake since 1947 and moved to McHenry in 2006. He was a former  employee of Althoff Industries, where he worked for 43 years. He was a member of Union No. 265 HVAC, McHenry Masonic Lodge No.158 A.F. & A.M., Woodstock Moose Lodge 1329, American Legion Post 491, Polish Legion of American Veterans Post 188 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4600. He attended Nativity Lutheran Church and Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church. 

Survivors include three daughters, Pamela (Ralph) Thoma, McHenry, Jeanette (Otis) Lowrimore, Hoover, Ala., and Carol (Robert) Housby, Woodland Park, Colo.; a son, Ronald (Yvonne) Gabel, McHenry; 10 grandchildren, Kym (Phil) Belyaev, Kevin Diedrich, Maria Faith (Jason) Lowrimore, Jessi (John) Tymchyshyn, Jimi Hamilton, Brandye (Mike) Lange, Brent (Sariya) Lange, Jenny Housby, Tami (Brad) Housby-McDow and Robert J. Housby; 11 great-grandchildren, Drew, Kati, Zach, Lexi, Colleen, Ryan, Dalton, Kendell, Trenton, Leah, Jasira and one on the way; and a special friend, Nettie Keyzer. 

He was preceded in death by his wife, May 26, 2004; an infant son, Kenneth Gabel; and his parents. 

Visitation and the funeral were May 25 at Justen Funeral Home & Crematory, McHenry.
