It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of my beloved husband, David “Dave” Nathanial Stone (July 20, 1943-Feb. 5, 2024).
Dave was born to Charles and Bernadette Stone in Fox River Grove, Ill. He graduated from Barrington High School in 1961. He continued his education at the University of Illinois, and earned his JD from the University of Wisconsin in 1968.
Dave began his law career with Motorola in 1968 and moved to Woodstock in 1970 to work at a local law firm. He operated his own practice for over 40 years, first in Woodstock and ultimately in McHenry. For the entirety of that time, he also worked as an assistant state’s attorney for McHenry County. As retirement age neared, Dave was offered an opportunity to complete his professional career by helping to lead the civil division of the State’s Attorney’s Office of McHenry County. He was honored to accept and later retired from there in 2009.
After retirement, Dave continued doing pro bono work for Prairie State Legal Services for several years and served the community as a Planning and Zoning Commission member. Ultimately, he served as chairman until his health prevented continued service in 2022.
Dave was a dedicated husband, father, sibling, uncle, and friend to many. He married Jill in 1991, and they spent the next 33 years together traveling the world. They were fortunate to make several trips abroad and enjoyed an annual holiday in Cabo San Lucas. Dave and Jill were Willow Creek Community Church members, active participants in a small prayer group for over 30 years, and more recently, they joined The Chapel in McHenry. Dave spent spare time volunteering at The ReStore in McHenry, was an avid golfer, studied Spanish, and enjoyed watching the Chicago Bulls with his dog by his side.
Dave was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Robert and Thomas; and sister; Leona.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Jill; five children, Matthew (Kimberly), Mark, Ryan (Marnie), Shawn (Jackie), and Robin (Gigi); 11 grandchildren: Autumn (David), Zachary (Emily), Paiton, Zoe, Sydney, Piper, Ray, Stella, Bo, Blu, and Maple; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service for Dave will be held at The Chapel in McHenry on Saturday, Feb. 17, at noon. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Journey Care Hospice of Barrington or the ReStore in McHenry.
