Charles ‘Mike’ Meikel

Charles “Mike” Meikel, 94, died peacefully in Crystal Lake.

He lived in McHenry County most of his life.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was stationed in the Asiatic/Pacific theater as a gunner’s mate on the U.S.S. Gwin. He was awarded the Silver Star medal.

He took great pride in his work as a carpenter and maintaining the farm and orchard. Later in life, he embraced the hobby of wood turning, creating many beautiful and intricately patterned bowls.

Survivors include his wife, Bev; a daughter, Kathy (Doug) Mather; and a granddaughter, Kailyn.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters.

A brief memorial service and gathering of friends will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13, at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, McHenry.

Memorials can be made to Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Lake County Honor Flight Program and Crystal Pines Nursing Home.
