Bonnie Lynn (Farris) Giles, 76

Bonnie Lynn (Farris) Giles, 76, of Woodstock, peacefully passed away July 25, 2023, surrounded by her family at the Florence Nursing Home in Marengo

Bonnie was born Jan. 4, 1947, in Belvidere, Ill., to Walter and Kathryn (Zeien) Farris.

She attended Marian Central High School for two years before transferring to Woodstock High School to attend nursing classes. She had also met the love of her life, Robert, at this time so that may have also led to her transferring. After High School, she attended McHenry County College and Elgin Community College, earning her degree in nursing. She went on to be a much-loved nurse at Centegra Hospital (Woodstock Memorial Hospital) for 50 years. She loved all aspects of nursing, especially her years in OB and the emergency room.

On Sept. 25, 1965, Bonnie married her high school sweetheart, Robert Giles, in Woodstock. They later became a family of three, welcoming their son, Robert, and then a family of four two years later, welcoming their daughter, Kerrie. They later welcomed a son, William, who preceded her in death in 1974. Bonnie loved being a mom and would call at the exact minute they were born to wish them happy birthday.

As much as Bonnie loved being a mom, things shifted for her when she became a grandma. Bonnie was a best friend to her five grandchildren and loved spoiling them. She loved playing video games with them and would often practice when they were not around to figure out all the tricks so she could win. She also loved knitting, crocheting, and sewing. One of her greatest joys was making outfits and sweaters for her grandkids.

Bonnie is survived by her husband of 57 years, Bob Giles; a son, Robert (Cindy) Giles; a daughter, Kerrie (Cully) Butenschoen; grandchildren, Cassidy (Benjamin) Watterson, Kennidy (Jack) Giles, Gunnar (Lauren) Butenschoen, Gretchen Butenschoen, and Gavin (Bobbi Prehn) Butenschoen; a brother, Dr. Bruce (Bernadette) Farris; a sister-in-law, Bridget Farris; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, William; and brothers, Ronald Farris, and Bryce Farris.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, Aug. 19, 2023, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Woodstock Moose Lodge, 406 Clay St., Woodstock. All other services will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Boxer Rebound Animal Shelter, 4915 Ringwood Road, Ringwood, IL 60072 boxerrebound.com.
