Betty A. McSweeney Aavang

Betty A. McSweeney Aavang, 83, Woodstock, died Thursday, Aug. 27, 2015, in Woodstock.

She was born June 2, 1932, to Wilbur and Irene (Carraher) Bakke in Madison, Wis.

On Sept. 6, 1958, she married James McSweeney in Madison. He preceded her in death Feb. 3, 1998. On Sept. 6, 2000, she was remarried to Victor Aavang. He preceded her in death Feb. 10, 2006.

She and James moved to Woodstock from Hoffman Estates in 1991. She was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Woodstock. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1955. She enjoyed traveling and experiencing everything the world has to offer.

She was a member of the Woodstock Garden Club and the Bull Valley Country Club. She volunteered at the Woodstock Food Pantry for many years. She enjoyed playing pinochle with friends. But most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and her faithful companion, Mollie.

Survivors include three children, Kathleen (James Patrick Jr.) Scanlon, Eugene (Kathleen) McSweeney and Keith (Jodessa) McSweeney; nine grandchildren, Beatrice, Patrick, George, James, Daniel, Thomas, Colleen, Christopher and Cecelia; a brother, Thomas (Donna) Bakke; four stepchildren, David Aavang, Michael (Heidi) Aavang, Dale Aavang and Phyllis Aavang; seven step-grandchildren, Christopher, Morgan, Alexander, Laura, Elizabeth, Nicole and Nicholas; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband; and her second husband.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1, at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, 1211 N. Seminary Ave., Woodstock. The visitation will continue from 10 a.m. until the funeral mass at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 312 Lincoln Ave. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Woodstock.
