Alice Nulle, 91

Alice was born in Woodstock on May 29, 1931, to Emil and Birdie Schroeder and was a graduate of Woodstock High School. She was the first switchboard operator in the old Courthouse when the switchboard was first installed in 1952, working at the County Clerk’s office 1947 to 1955. 

She married Henry A. Nulle on Sept. 5, 1956, at St. Charles, Ill. He passed in 2007, and they enjoyed life together for over 51 years. He was sheriff of McHenry County 1980 through 1986. Alice also worked at Pure Oil Co., Memorial Hospital, Flowerwood, and was a bailiff in the 19th Judicial District for 12 years. 

She had been a long-time member of St. Ann’s Church, serving as church school teacher, secretary, and in the ECW, as well as a choir member over the years since 1954. She and her husband have also been members of Trinity Episcopal Church in Baraboo, Wis., since 1995, where they had a summer home nearby at one time. She was a Girl Scout leader, Boy Scout leader, on the Bicentennial Commission, member of the American Legion Auxiliary, former Elks Doe Club, life member of the Hospital Auxiliary, former Woodstock Community Choir, Paradise People, Perkins Players, Historical Society for McHenry County, and at one time delivered Meals on Wheels. She was “put up” and “put down” for her many causes for the good of Woodstock, one being for the walking path at Emricson Park and getting benches along the way for the need-be exercisers with COPD or the like, which she had for many years.

She enjoyed her family, home, her yard of birds and flowers, growing things wherever she lived, and sharing her expertise in the kitchen with friends and family. Music was a big part of her life in school, church, musicals, enjoying all kinds in vocal and piano.

Creating in the arts mostly to share with friends and family was done in woodcarving, poetry, ceramics, needlework, quilting, painting on furniture, acrylic landscapes, painting of her “Santas” on sleds, and she illustrated several cookbooks, publishing two herself. She enjoyed the outdoors, camping in earlier years when the children were young, and traveling the state of Wisconsin, particularly her love of Baraboo and/or Door County. She blamed her longevity in life to her diet of “M&M’s” (milkshakes and martinis!) and could not forget the “dream trips come true” to Hawaii and Ixtapa, Mexico. She completed her vow of 20 years by skydiving for her 75th birthday and then again after her 80h birthday with her then 18-year-old granddaughter, Allison.

She is survived by her children, Glenn Nulle, Las Vegas, Bruce (Jean) Nulle, Belvidere, and Ruth (Christopher) Nulle-Hoxie, Huntley; six grandchildren, Tara Matz, Steven Nulle, Justin Nulle, Dr. Jeremy Ritzert, Allison Mann, and Christopher Nulle; eight great-grandchildren (and two on the way), MacKenzie Palmer, Gavin Nulle, Logan Nulle, Olivia Nulle, Tinley Nulle, Shelby Lynn Matz, Henry Ritzert, and Bethany Alice Mann; as well as many much-loved nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband; a sister, Beatrice Polizzi; brother-in-law, Nicholas Polizzi, sister, Dr. Ruth Calladine Haynes, brother-in-law, Dr. Walter Haynes, her brother Robert Schroeder; and a sister-in-law, Shirley Schroeder. 

There will be a memorial gathering on Saturday, April 15, 2023, at St. Ann’s Episcopal Church in Woodstock from 1 p.m. until the 2: p.m. memorial service. A dessert reception will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
