Denise M. Hoover, 79

Denise M. Hoover (August 19, 1947 – September 12, 2026) passed peacefully, surrounded by family, art, and music; the very things that shaped her life and spirit.

Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Denise grew up in a lively family of seven. She was lovingly guided by her mother, alongside her eldest sister Annette and her brothers Peter, Carl, and her twin, Lou. From an early age, Denise was captivated by the arts. That passion carried her to St. Mary’s College and Notre Dame, where she earned her Art Degree (Go Fighting Irish!).

After graduation, Denise spent a memorable period photographing the Detroit Ballet Company. Although photography didn’t become her long-term profession, she found steady footing in the insurance industry. Still, her heart never strayed far from art, she returned to it in every spare moment, in every season of her life.

Faith was another cornerstone for Denise. As a decades-long member of Grace Lutheran Church in Woodstock, IL, she poured her energy into service and community. Her devotion led her to Africa for missionary work, a journey that left a profound and lasting imprint on her life.

Denise’s path was filled with friendship, love, and adventure. She met and married Charles Hoover, and together they spent several years in North Carolina, where they welcomed their first child, Patrice Marie. Returning to Illinois, they soon celebrated the arrival of their second child, Buck. True to her free-spirited nature, Denise was on the Hidden Lake beach the very next day, embracing life with her growing family.

As her children grew, Denise felt called back to the passion she had set aside. In her retirement years, she returned to Vermont College of Fine Arts and earned her Master of Fine Arts. She spent these years joyfully immersed in creativity — making art, exhibiting her work, exploring new techniques, and sharing her love for “The Artist’s Way.” Her generosity, curiosity, and free spirit inspired everyone, fortunate enough to know her.

Denise’s legacy lives on as inspiration to the many that know her. She is survived by her daughter Patrice Dunn (Adam) of Rockford, Il; Denise’s son Buck Hoover of Boulder, CO; and her many nieces and nephews. All which have been introduced and encouraged by her artistic dreams.

In honor of Denise’s lifelong commitment to creativity, community, and goodwill, the family invites you to continue her legacy. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to causes close to her heart:
