James Allen “Jim” Campion, 79, of Woodstock, passed away in his home surrounded by love on April 19, 2026.
Jim was born in Rockford on February 2, 1947, son of O’Neill and Catherine (Deininger) Campion.
Jim married his college sweetheart Barbara Schuerings on August 2, 1969 and they shared 56 years together. They raised three wonderful daughters, Jeannine (Chad) Hadzima, Angela (Craig) Russell, and Ann-Marie (Craig) Cudzilo. They have six grandchildren, Rebecca, Theresa, and Julia Hadzima, Carina and Christian Cudzilo, and Annelise Russell.
Jim attended Rockford Catholic schools and Boylan High School. He majored in Sociology at St. Norbert College, where he graduated cum laude in 1969. He then received his Juris Doctorate cum laude from Northwestern University School of Law in 1972. While in school, Jim was in ROTC and then served his country as a Captain in the U.S. Army Reserves.
A job offering at the firm of Joslyn & Green brought him to Woodstock. Although the firm changed names over the years, Jim remained true and it ultimately became Campion Curran Law. He practiced law for 54 years. One of the proudest moments in his law career was presenting a case in front of the Illinois Supreme Court.
Jim always believed in the importance of being involved in the community. He did exactly that by chairing the Woodstock 4th of July Fireworks Committee, the District #200 Education Foundation, the Woodstock Fine Arts Fair, the McHenry County Foundation, the St. Mary Parish Financial Council, and the Professional Advisory Commission Dept. of Health. He was a 40 year member and past president of the Woodstock Rotary Club. He received many honors including the Joe Conerty Award, the Harold Buschkopf Award, the District #200 Award of Excellence, and the Distinguished Service Award from the McHenry County Bar Association.
Jim will be loved and dearly missed by his family, including many nieces and nephews, colleagues, and friends. In addition to his wife, daughters, and grandchildren, he is survived by his four siblings, Tom (Joan) Campion, Bill (Bev) Campion, Peg (Tom) Miller, and Pete (Rose) Campion.
Recently, his granddaughter Carina asked him what his goals for her would be. His response was, “Find a job you are truly happy with and do good things for your community. You will be very satisfied with your life.”
In accordance with Jim’s wishes, there will be no visitation, but all are invited to share in the Funeral Mass celebrated at St. Mary Catholic Church, 312 Lincoln Avenue in Woodstock on Thursday, April 30, 2026 at 10:30 AM. Burial will immediately follow at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Woodstock.
