Trust the Torch!

Denis J. Moeller, 83

Denis J. Moeller, 83, of Woodstock passed away at home comfortably, peacefully, and surrounded by his loving family, on Feb. 23, 2026.

Affectionately known as “Denny” and “Grandpy,” he was born in Chicago and grew up in Mount Prospect. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, going on many adventures with his “crew,” including Tom, Essie, Jim, David, and Ken.

He served in the Army with SGS (Secretary General Staff) during Vietnam, driving Generals stateside and taking Princess Grace and her children to the World’s Fair. He knew his loving wife, Ginny, through family and, at a family party while wearing a mesh shirt and pirate pants (her telling the story), he fell in love. They were married and had one daughter. While working at a grocery importing company, he risked everything and took a massive leap of faith. Denis moved the family to Woodstock in 1981 to take over a sandcast aluminum foundry (with his partner, Dan), a business in which he had no experience. He was owner/operator of Arrow Aluminum Castings until his retirement at the age of 74. Denis was exceedingly proud of his work ethic and the success of his company with his dedicated employees of many years. His favorite hangout was the Moose, where he went with his friend Hank for fish fry and to see his “girlfriends.” He continued catch-up calls with Essie and laughed at good stories. Tom and Judi were always by his side, and loved to take part in his continued party of life. He was so proud of his grandchildren, Maren and Jack, and loved to see them play in sports and hear about their ongoing stories while growing up. Many of their friends, as well as Gary and Amanda’s friends, spent time with Grandpy and loved him very much. The special connection he had with these people in his life cannot be overstated.

He is survived by his dedicated daughter and son-in-law, Amanda and Gary Weller; grandchildren, Maren and Jack; sister, Juanita (Larry) Rhein; nephews, Mike, Kevin, Bobby, Jim, and Mark; niece, Denise; Goddaughter, Karen, their spouses, and great-nieces and -nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia; father, Raymond Sr.; mother, Belle (Balbina); brother Raymond; and nephew Frank.

Denny was not a man to be mired down in grief, and he would ask all that knew him to remember the good times, the laughs, the smiles, and dice games. We can take comfort that, after winning his battle with cancer with the support of his nurses, who were also his “girlfriends,” he was able to continue to bring joy to his family and those around him for 10 more years, always asking, “Are you ready to dance?” That is the definition of a life well-lived. As Grandpy would say, Nostrovia!

The family asks that in lieu of flowers or plants that a donation be made to Moose Charities. Denis was a member since 2001, and it is an organization that was near and dear to his heart. Services will be held at Schneider, Leucht, Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home on March 7, 2026, in Woodstock. Visitation from 9 to 11 a.m.; service at 11 and burial to follow at McHenry County Memorial Park.
