William L. Gilliland, beloved father, grandfather, and proud United States Marine, passed away surrounded by family. He was born in Tell City, Indiana, to William Eugene and Lela Gilliland.
William lived a life defined by service, kindness, and a deep love for the outdoors. Whether hunting, fishing, or simply sitting outside listening to the sounds of nature, he found joy and peace in the world around him. After moving to Missouri, he often said he felt as though he had found “heaven on earth.” He was proud to be one of the founders of Season’s Eden Glamping Wellness Retreat, a place that reflects his love of nature and his vision for a peaceful, welcoming community.
Music and community were special parts of his life—he loved listening to the soulful flute music of Carlos Niquia, and whenever the opportunity arose, he enjoyed singing karaoke and sharing laughter with friends. Above all, William believed in treating people with respect and kindness. “If you were good to him, he was good to you,” a principle he lived by every day.
He is survived by his daughter, Season Gilliland (Davis), and his cherished grandson, Lincoln. He will be remembered for his generous heart, his humor, and his love of family and nature.
A Celebration of Life will commence on Saturday, October 18, at 5:30 p.m. (dusk) at The Park on the Square in Woodstock, Illinois, with a military service honoring his service to the United States Marine Corps. A dinner and karaoke gathering will follow at Old Rivers on Route 14.
In lieu of flowers, plants may be sent to the Eden Arboretum 501(c)(3), one of the legacy projects William and his daughter were building together. The family is committed to continuing collaborations with veterans to keep the retreat’s veteran missions alive, honoring William’s service and vision.
