Margery Violet Piska

Margery Violet (Bernhardt) Piska, 99, Woodstock, died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2012, at her home, surrounded by her loving family, following complications from surgery.

She was born May 18, 1913, in Woodstock, and was raised on her family farm.

She worked at the Woodstock Sentinel newspaper for more than 30 years. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Woodstock, where she was very active in the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League.  She delivered meals to shut-ins well into her 90s.  

She was affectionately known as “Mom,” “Grandma,” and “Aunt Marge.” 

Survivors include a son, Frank Piska; three daughters, Harriet (Carl) Kuhn, Elaine Wood and Karen Mizen; four granddaughters, Michelle (Dwayne) Van Wazer, Tiffany and Jennifer Kuhn and Stephanie Ulbrecht; three great-grandchildren, Ryne and Joshua Van Wazer and Olivia Ulbrecht; a nephew, William (Betty) Reiser; two nieces, Carole (Mike) Coberley and Jane Bernhardt; two great-nieces, Debbie (Tim) Young and Diane (Robert) Boker; a great-great-nephew, Brock Young; a great-great-niece, Ashley Young; and many close friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Piska; a brother, Walter Bernhardt; and a sister, Arlene Reiser.

Visitation  was Aug. 27 and 28 at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock.  The funeral was Aug. 28 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, followed by burial at McHenry County Memorial Park, Woodstock.

Memorials can be made to the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, St. John’s Lutheran Church, 401 St. John’s Road, Woodstock, IL 60098.
