Private property rights give way to ‘public good’

Independent file photo Cars are parked in a city-owned public parking lot at Calhoun and Jefferson streets, where developers plan to build a hotel to open in late 2026. City officials want the vacant lot to the north for parking to serve the hotel and other current and future needs. The city has filed a lawsuit to take the property, but still hopes for an out-of-court settlement.
