All three girls basketball teams have at least five games under their belt this season, each starting out with Thanksgiving weekend tournaments. Marian Central Catholic and Woodstock North high schools traveled to Elgin to compete in the Harvest Christian Academy tournament. Woodstock High School girls played at the Burlington Central High School tournament.
Following is a preview of each Woodstock girls team, compiled from email responses of coaches:
Marian Central Catholic High School
Head coach: Tony Powe
Assistant coaches: LeAnn Golembiewski, Meagan Murphy
Varsity roster: 11
Top returning players: Vannessa Garrelts, Katie Littner and Amber Reynolds
Promising varsity newcomers: Janelle Allen, Lindsey Bahl and Regan Dineen
Goals this year: Our focus is always to try to get better each day, as players, teammates and coaches. The season is a marathon, not a sprint, and the goal is to make gradual improvements so we will be playing our best in time for regionals in February.
Challenges: Playing in the East Suburban Catholic Conference means you don’t get any nights off. With our conference, plus our nonconference schedule, it will be a grind but provide lots of experience as we move toward regionals.
Woodstock High School
Head coach: Jen Nichols
Assistant coaches: Larin Carlson and Jay Fuller
Varsity roster: 11
Top returning players: Autumn Overly, Camryn Tafoya and Emma Brand
Promising varsity newcomers: Jess Flynn and Erin Lockwood.
Goals this year: Our goal is to place in the top three of the Kishwaukee River Conference. We want to be competitive against every opponent and always stay positive and focused on the bigger picture.
Challenges: We have a combination of veterans and newcomers. The girls must learn to trust each other and build chemistry.
Woodstock North High School
Head coach: Mike Lewis
Assistant coaches: Trevor Mack and Mark Tschappat
Varsity roster: 12
Top returning players: Hanna Seils, Taylor Prerost and Sami Long
Promising varsity newcomer: Kaitlin Ford
Goals this year: Compete and get better each day.
