Woodstock High School’s Kylie Hagmann and Marian Central Catholic High School’s Ryan Jones qualified to compete in the IHSA State Cross-Country Finals Saturday, Nov. 4, at Detweiller Park, Peoria.
All sectional races were held Oct. 28. Temperatures in the upper 30s – nearly 40 degrees colder than the regionals the week before – strong winds and rain-soaked footing were a challenge for runners and spectators alike.
The WHS girls team competed in the 2A Kaneland Sectional, finishing in 12th place. The team will not advance, but junior Kylie Hagmann finished the race in eighth place with a time of 18 minutes, 6 seconds, earning a spot in the state finals. The 2A girls state race will be at 11 a.m.
“My race went well, but I was super cold,” said Hagmann. “My goal was to get a season-best time, and I did… I’m excited and honored to represent my team at the state meet.”
This is Hagmann’s second trip to the state meet. Last year, she finished 22nd, earning her all-state recognition.
In addition to Hagmann, scoring runners for WHS were Shannon Koscinski (19:11.6), Theresa Presisto (20:21.2), Lauren Wietermann (20:37.3) and Madeline Scolio (21:50.6).
The girls team from WNHS competed in the Kaneland Sectional, finishing the race in 18th place. Scoring runners were Meghan McCann (20:32.7), Amber Elliott (20:57.4), Emma Mergl (21.06.2), Amanda Valdes-Garcia (21.10.8) and Shelby Wellwerts (21:11.1).
Shelby Truckenbrod and Caroline Binotti represented Marian in the Kaneland Sectional, finishing side-by-side, tied for 59th place (19:50).
Ryan Jones competed with the Marian boys team in the Class 1A Sectional in Oregon. Overall the Marian team finished 10th, ending its season, but a seventh-place finish (16:28) for Jones earned him a spot to advance as an individual. He will run in the 1A boys race at 10 a.m.
“The race felt good, I had a great start and was basically able to maintain my position throughout the race,” said Jones in an email. “I dropped nine seconds from last year’s sectional. My goal this year is to medal at state.”
The WHS boys ran at the Kaneland Sectional, placing 13th overall. Scoring runners for WHS were junior Julio Arellano (16:14.3), Aiden Schleutermann (16:24.3), Anthony Thomas (16:55.6), Diego Cruz (17:14.0) and Elvis Valadez (17:22.3).
Sophomore Aidan Filetti represented WNHS as an individual in the Kaneland Sectional, finishing the race in 17:20.
