Student of the Week
October 25, 2017
Our Student of the Week is Patrick Brunken. He is a senior at Marian Central Catholic High School. He is the son of Pat and Julianne Brunken, Huntley.
“Patrick is very concerned about the welfare of others. He looks out for everyone, whether it’s through his role as a mentor to incoming freshmen, a related leader or as part of an athletic team. He is a positive role model for others,” said one of his teachers.
In school, Patrick received IHSA Academic Excellence recognition as a junior, has mentored underclassmen as a junior and senior and served as a retreat leader as a senior. He played football and lacrosse for four years and wrestled for three. He also participated in Catholics for Action for four years. In the community, he has volunteered at soup kitchens, nursing homes and helped coach St. Mary youth football teams.
When asked who inspires him, Patrick said Coach Drew Potthoff inspired him as a seventh-grader playing on a St. Mary football team. “I chose to attend Marian Central Catholic so I could continue the brotherhood [I experienced playing St. Mary football]. Coach Potthoff always pushed us to work hard but never let us forget that being a good teammate is more important.”
When asked why he feels successful, Patrick replied, “I feel I am successful because I am surrounded by people who push me, who are there for me, who expect big things from me. My friends, teachers, coaches and family have all played a role in my life.”
