WHS and Marian runners honored
As runners from Woodstock High School gathered at the start line Aug. 19 just before the annual Blue/White/Silver scrimmage run, a brief dedication ceremony was held to acknowledge the 14 new etched bricks added to the line at Emricson Park.
“We had to do something like this for Woodstock schools,” said Martin Sobczak, the former Streaks cross-country coach who started the brick line of names back in the mid-’80s. “If I have any memorial, it will be this.”
The bricks bear the names of individuals and teams from WHS and Marian Central Catholic High School that earned All-State honors in cross-country. Woodstock North High School will be included one day as well.
WHS head coach Jay Fuller used the opportunity to inspire his team during the dedication. He said, “I love this line. It’s a history for us. Hopefully, we’ll add more names to this soon.”
One of the new additions was a brick for Marian’s Abigail Jones, who graduated in May 2017. The All-State runner joins her mother, Laura Witek Jones, who has a brick for her All-State efforts for Marian in 1990, ’91 and ’92.
“We’re not right next to each other, and that’s OK,” said Witek Jones with a smile.
Abigail Jones was thrilled to be honored with a permanent tribute to her years of running at Emricson Park. A freshman in college, she will continue her running career at Loyola University this fall.
Seven individual bricks were added for Maura Beattie 2012 and 2013, Kylie Hagmann 2016, Luke Beattie 2013, 2014 and 2015 and Abigail Jones 2016. Team bricks were added for the 1980 girls team, and the 1967, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975 and 2010 boys teams.
