The Wonder Lake Chamber of Commerce recently hired a new executive director who hopes to build on the success of small businesses in the community.
Celeste Fuentes joined the chamber in April as executive director. Fuentes replaced Donna Sullivan, who moved to Florida with her family. Sullivan took over as executive director in 2004.
Fuentes said she was eager to take on the role in the community that welcomed her with open arms when she moved to the area last year. She grew up in Chicago and lived in Antioch previously. She shares her Wonder Lake home with her two daughters and a grandson and said the move to the area has been a positive one for her family.
“This is the most friendly town I’ve ever lived in, certainly,” Fuentes said.
Fuentes’ main responsibility is day-to-day management of all chamber functions and upcoming events. The role also includes being a key representative and advocate for Wonder Lake business owners.
Fuentes said her biggest goal is to help small businesses grow and work together while promoting and strengthening the community.
Some of the upcoming events Fuentes and the chamber are planning include the annual Independence Day celebration — this year, held Saturday, July 1, and the Wonder Lake Open Golf Outing Friday, June 9, at Boone Creek Golf Course.
“I love that aspect of it — the event planning. I’m hoping to build the chamber and the small businesses in this area while working with our community. I’m hoping I will do Wonder Lake proud,” Fuentes said.
The Chamber holds meetings the first Tuesday of each month at 5 p.m. and welcomes community members to attend.
When she’s not helping promote the community, Fuentes said she loves taking her grandson fishing on the lake.
The Wonder Lake Chamber of Commerce was formed in 1956. The chamber is open Tuesday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
