A house explosion in Marengo June 11 that left more than 50 homes damaged or destroyed and sent several residents to the hospital was felt in Woodstock and throughout the region.
The blast completely destroyed a single-family home and left surrounding homes uninhabitable. No one was killed in the incident.
At around 4:50 a.m., Marengo Fire and Rescue crews were dispatched to the 500 block of 7th Circle in Marengo for an explosion, according to a statement issued by the McHenry County Emergency Management Agency. The initial explosion resulted in fire and heavy debris to several surrounding homes and vehicles.
As of June 12, the cause of the blast had not been confirmed by fire authorities.
Crews from more than 15 neighboring agencies responded to the scene to assist. Four homes sustained fire damage from the explosion. The Illinois State Fire Marshal is conducting an investigation and as of June 12, utility companies were assessing the situation and working to restore power to the 136 customers that were impacted, according to McHenry County EMA.
The Salvation Army, Red Cross and Metropolitan Emergency Support Services are working to assist those in need. The city established a relief and cooling center for affected residents and their pets at Marengo High School.
Marengo Area OutReach Enterprises Inc. is working with the city to provide assistance for those affected. The M.O.R.E. Center is a nonprofit that works to provide emergency aid and basic life necessities to individuals and families.
The M.O.R.E. Center is currently accepting food, clothing, small appliance and monetary donations. Checks must be made payable to M.O.R.E. Center and must have Marengo Disaster Fund in the memo section. The M.O.R.E. Center will be open Tuesday through Friday, June 13 through 16, from 9 a.m. to noon. The Miss Woodstock Scholarship Pageant will be accepting donations Sunday, June 18, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the bandstand in the Park in the Square. Donations can include household items, nonperishable food, clothing and monetary donations.
