Back-to-back shutout performances from the Marian Central varsity girls soccer team gave them the title in the Class 2A Belvidere North Regional last week. The Lady ’Canes defeated Belvidere 4-0 May 17 and top-seeded Belvidere North 3-0 May 19 to be crowned regional champions.
“We had a game plan to impose ourselves defensively against key players and create moments to score when they were disorganized,” head coach Karl Smith said of facing Belvidere North. “As a No. 1 seed, they are a team that usually plays with the lead. We were able to score first, which put them in a scenario that they are not used to. They seemed to force balls into areas where we were organized and lost possession after going down 1-0.”
The Lady ’Canes scored twice in the second half of the championship game to seal the win. They finished a respectable 4-3 in the East Suburban Catholic Conference, good for fourth place.
Marian seniors Karlie Blaz and Erika Dacanay and junior Addie Fortin finished with All-Conference honors.
“Although the games will certainly get tougher going forward, I feel like we are progressing and will be a tough opponent for anyone,” Smith said.
The Lady ’Canes will face Burlington Central in the Class 2A Hampshire Sectional at 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 24.
