Wrestlers from all three Woodstock high schools competed in the IHSA Class 2A regional Feb. 3 at Woodstock North High School. The top three individuals in each weight class will advance to sectionals, hosted in Wauconda Friday and Saturday, Feb. 10 and 11.

The Marian Central Catholic High School Hurricanes led Woodstock’s high schools, qualifying five individuals, junior Anthony Randazzo, 132-pound weight class (champion, 3-1, one pin, 30-6 on the season), senior Anthony Silva, 145 (second, 2-1, two pins, 33-4 on the season), junior Luke Silva, 152 (champion, 3-0, one technical fall, 33-5 on the season), junior Zach Gustafson, 195 (second, 1-1, 15-11 on the season) and junior Patrick Brunken, 220 (second, 2-1, one pin, 17-14 on the season).

“From a team standpoint, it was a successful day,” said Hurricanes coach David Silva. Marian placed third in overall team with 121.5 points.

“We plan to build on this performance next week at sectionals. It’s a little bittersweet because we had some good kids end their seasons, including two seniors,” Silva said.

The Thunder had three individual qualifiers, freshman Carter Miller, 106 (third, 3-1, three pins, 25-15 on the season), sophomore Cole Walkington, 120 (champion, 2-0, two pins, 30-10 on the season) and junior Chris Flores, 220 (champion, 1-1, one pin, 2-7 on the season).Eddie Flores, a WNHS sophomore, competes against a Johnsburg wrestler Feb. 3. “It didn’t go as we hoped, but the three we advanced wrestled well,” said Thunder coach Tim Creighton.

The Woodstock High School Blue Streaks qualified two individuals, sophomore Aidan Jacobs, 182 (second place, 1-1, one pin, 13-7 on the season) and senior Nathan Van Hoorn, 220 (3-1, two pins, 11-7 on the season).

“Our guys wrestled hard and we were proud of how hard they worked this season. It’s been a rebuilding year and a learning year for a lot of our younger guys who will return next year, so I think they learned a lot from being at regionals. Aidan and Nathan have worked very hard to get to where they are at, and we are excited to see them wrestle at sectionals next week,” said WHS head coach Jon Grell. WHS senior Nathan Van Hoorn wrestles an opponent from Harvard Feb. 3. In the nine-school regional, wrestlers from Woodstock schools earned the three qualifying spots in the 220-pound weight class. Flores, WNHS, finished first, Brunken, Marian, finished second and Van Hoorn, WHS, took third.

Top team honors went to Crystal Lake Central with 178.5 points.
