Woodstock North High School wrestling finished 2-1 at a dual meet Dec. 28.
The dual meet was hosted at Antioch High School, and the Thunder defeated St. Viator 45-34 and Highland Park 41-36. They fell to Carmel 45-18.
Junior Jake Finch, 126-pound weightclass, sophomore Ed Flores, 145, and freshman Carter Miller, 106, finished with two pins each. Sophomore Cole Walkington, 120, senior Nathan Estrada, 132, junior Brian Kline, 170, freshman Aaron Montgomery, 138, and junior Nicco Mazzanti also earned pins.
The varsity roster includes four underclassmen who have pulled their own weight so far this season.
“So far we’re doing pretty well. We’ve definitely grown as a team since last year. We have a lot of young guys stepping up to varsity spots, and only one senior on the team,” Walkington said.
Walkington, a team captain, is at 16-3 on the season with nine pins. He recently finished third at the Harvard Invite, held Dec. 16 and 17. He currently is listed as an honorable mention on the wrestling ranking site Illinois Matmen.
“Coach never lets us get down. He tries to make us the best we can possibly be,” Walkington said.
“It’s been good. We’ve been doing well. We’re competing, giving up between four to five forfeits each time and winning duals,” head coach Tim Creighton commented.
“I try to encourage them and let them know as coaching staff, we believe in them. To constantly look forward and keep their goals in mind, and go from there,” Creighton added.
The Thunder are at 8-5 on the season. Their next meet is at Belvidere North Jan. 5.
