Fans will be flocking to the Woodstock Opera House Friday, Dec. 30, to see a show that – for many – will trigger memories of their adolescent years. “Piano Man – A Tribute to Billy Joel and Elton John” will feature music from the mega-superstars, performed by Mike Sigman.
A professional performer for his entire adult life, Sigman, Chicago, grew up listening to the stars of the ’70s and ’80s, and that familiarity contributes to what has been described as an uncanny ability to mimic the voices of stars.
“I’m a piano player,” said Sigman who holds five degrees in music. “I was a heavy metal singer for years. You don’t make it [doing that anymore] when you’re 50.”
He and Piano Man Productions are doing about 100 shows a year, specializing in tribute performances. In addition to Piano Man, they perform “Diva: A Tribute to the Women of Pop,” “The Neverly Brothers – a Rock ‘n’ Roll Tribute from Elvis to The Beatles” and “ABBA Salute” which they performed Sept. 3 to a sold out crowd at Woodstock Opera House.
Sigman attributes the success of their tributes to the musicians. He said ABBA is second only to the Eagles in popularity and Billy Joel and Elton John each have 40-plus year careers. With 55 albums for Elton John and 21 for Billy Joel, Sigman said there’s no way he’s learned all their material.
“We have prepared five hours worth of music,” he said. “The music is awesome if you’re a piano player. Some of the songs are phenomenal and intensely personal.”
Though he’s never met Billy Joel or Elton John, Sigman said both have acknowledged the act and they love it.
“We usually play a gig at The Cubby Bear when Billy Joel plays at Wrigley Field,” said Sigman. “We’re always hoping Billy will stop by after the show.”
Sigman and Piano Man Productions will be back at the Opera House Saturday, Feb. 4, to present their Neverly Brothers show and another collaboration for Sigman – The Sigman Brothers – will present “Joan – A Musical Premiere” Friday, Feb. 10. The original musical is based on the amazing life of Joan of Arc. The third musical for the brothers, “Joan” is a story that Sigman felt passionate about sharing.
