For the second year in a row, the Marian Central varsity volleyball team took home the championship at the Huntley Invitational.
The reigning state champions took down DeKalb 2-1 (25-27, 25-20, 25,15) and Glenbard North 2-0 (25-18, 25-15) in the first day of the invite Oct. 7 and then defeated Rockford Boylan 2-0 (25-9, 25-19) and Crystal Lake Central 2-0 (25-21, 25-18) the following day. In the championship game Oct. 8, they beat Huntley 2-0 (25-22, 28-26) to win the title.
The final win was not as straightforward as the 2-0 scoreline might indicate.
During the championship match against Huntley, the Lady ‘Canes found themselves down by three at one point. Marian Central coach Laura Watling kept her team calm and poised, despite their excitement to get ready for homecoming later that evening.
“We needed to hit our spots a little bit better. I was getting frustrated that they kept getting the same types of kills,” Watling said. “Once we were able to focus on fixing a couple of those little things, it makes the rest of our game that much better. We were able to stay within our offense, and once we can run offense we’re in good shape.”
Marian Central is 27-1 on the season and remains undefeated in the East Suburban Catholic Conference. Next up will be the Rockford Boylan Invitational Saturday, Oct. 15. Their next and final regular-season home match will be Tuesday, Oct. 18, against conference rival Benet. The game is the Lady ’Canes’ senior night.
