Mildred Harriett Gillmore Memler

Mildred Harriett Gillmore Memler, 101, Lexington, S.C., died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2010. She was born Aug. 14, 1908, in Wadsworth, to Benjamin J. and Addie Devine Gillmore. She moved with her parents to Bristol, Wis., in 1910. She married John H. Memler June 8, 1932, in Bristol.

She attended County Normal School and Northern Illinois University, DeKalb. She taught for 20 years in schools in McHenry County. She was active in 4-H Clubs in Kenosha County and in McHenry County, serving as a leader for 25 years.

After retiring in 1971, she and her husband traveled extensively and eventually settled in Mercedes, Texas. She studied oil painting for several years, a hobby which she continued to enjoy. She was a member of the Durham-Orange Genealogy Society.

She organized and computerized the family genealogy records researched by her daughter Carol. She published several family history booklets for her family.

She moved to Agape Senior Community in West Columbia, S.C., in 1997. She was a member of Mt. Hebron United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Marlene Stewart, Durham, N.C.; six grandchildren, Timothy (Karen) Bennett, Lexington, Kathleen (Scott) Bodell, Lapeer, Mich., Lee (Meg) Bennett, Plainfield, Gavin (Julie) Romig-Koch, Cary, N.C., Galen (Sandra Schlotzhauer) Koch, Chapel Hill, N.C., and Travis (Julie) Koch, Newark, Del.; 11 great-grandchildren, Amy, Betsy and Craig Bennett, Caroline and Patrick Bodell, Alexandra Bennett, Marlena and Garrett Koch and Calli, Caitin and Caden Romig-Koch; a sister, Nellie Graham, Coral Springs, Fla.; a brother, Ernest (Marie) Gillmore, Salem, Wis.; two sisters-in-law, Ruth Gillmore, Cashton, Wis., and Wilma Gillmore, Juneau, Wis.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Carol Bennett; a son-in-law, Orlie Bennett; and three brothers, B. Frederick Gillmore, Glenn Gillmore and Warren Gillmore.
