In a showdown of the area’s two local boys varsity tennis teams, Woodstock High School topped Marian Central Catholic High School in a non-conference dual meet Wednesday at Marian, winning 4-1.
The sun was shining, but it was the wind that made the match difficult for both sides.
“It seems like we have been battling the weather all spring,” said Marian head coach Ginny Larsen.
In No. 1 singles action, WHS senior Ryan Ortmann topped Marian’s Louis Gioia 6-2, 6-4. Ortmann continues to pick up wins for the Blue Streaks.
“The wind was a factor on my judgement,” said Ortmann. “Louis (Gioia) was a very good opponent. It was tough.”
In a highly contested No. 2 singles match, the Streaks also earned a victory. Steven Rausch topped the Hurricanes’ Zeno Shin 6-3 and 7-6.
“It was tough today, very close match,” said Shin. “Weather was a big factor today.”
The team of John Drennen and Logan Taira won 6-4, 5-7 and 6-1 for WHS in No. 1 doubles against the ’Canes’ Karsten Hamilton-Smith and Andrew Klouda.
Marian’s Brian Lloyd and Mike Hettel won in No. 2 doubles 6-1, 6-2 over the Streaks’ Kenny Putman and Jessie Shoemaker.
In the final match of the day, WHS won in No. 3 doubles 6-3, 6-0 as Ryan Miller and Luke Kunzie were victorious over Brian Larsen and Jonathan Ducett.
In other meets during the week, Marian was defeated 5-0 by visiting Marmion Academy, and WHS defeated Rockford Lutheran High School 4-0 Monday. Rausch won in No.2 singles 6-1, 6-1 to help the Streaks to victory. The Streaks fell to Prairie Ridge High School 7-0 Tuesday at home. WHS defeated Grayslake Central High School Thursday on the road in a Fox Valley Conference dual meet, winning 4-3.
The ’Canes’ next meet is at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, against Lakes High School, while the Streaks play the same day and time at Crystal Lake Central High School.
