The Marian Central Catholic High School varsity girls soccer team hosted Guilford High School Wednesday at Marian.
The Lady ’Canes battled through the game, but suffered their first loss of the season falling to the Vikings 5-2.
The game was tied 2-2 at the 60-minute mark, but the Vikings went on the offensive and scored three more goals.
Marian senior goalkeeper Brittany Hull didn’t receive a lot of help in the second half.
“We didn’t have a lot of communication,” said Hull. “We broke down and didn’t man-up on defense, which made it difficult for me.”
Hull is closing in on the Illinois High School Association’s top-five list for career saves. Coming into the week, Hull had 464 career saves. Fifth-best is 618 saves while the state record is 974.
Juniors Brittany Wuensch and Kelly Petty scored the two goals for the Lady ’Canes.
“The fifty-fifty balls were difficult for us and we need to work on that,” said Wuesch. “It didn’t seem like we had much confidence.”
It appeared to be an off game for the Lady ’Canes, who had played well in their previous four matches and came into Wednesday’s contest unbeaten at 3-0-1.
“We came out in the first half. Then we lost stamina in the second,” said Marian head coach Jose Arias. “It didn’t seem like us, but we can learn from this.”
Earlier in the week, the Lady ’Canes played a strong game. Hull made 22 saves and picked up a shutout in a 1-0 win at Lakes High School. Petty scored the lone goal for Marian against the Eagles.
The Lady ’Canes play Thursday, April 17, at Immaculate Conception High School in Elmhurst in a Suburban Catholic Conference matchup. Marian is currently 3-1-1 on the season.
