The Woodstock High School baseball team will be under the guide of head coach John Oliveira in his first season as skipper.
The Blue Streaks finished last season with an overall record of 19-14 and were 7-8 in the Fox Valley Conference. The Streaks bowed out in the first round at regionals.
Top returning players include junior pitcher/first baseman Derek Brown, senior third baseman Austin Huitzacua, senior catcher Jason Schnulle, senior outfielder Aaron Kovac, senior outfielder Chris LeFever, senior outfielder Kale Huffman and senior second baseman Jake Murphy.
Top new players are junior pitcher/first baseman Garrett Gee, junior pitcher/outfielder Kyle Sahs and junior shortstop/pitcher Tom Wilson.
“With the toughness of the FVC this year, we feel we have the athletes to compete day in and day out,” said Oliveira. “If we stay healthy we can build on the success from last year.”

Woodstock
track and field
Woodstock boys track and field head coach John Fredericks is in his first season at the helm.
“We plan on being very competitive and much improved this year,” said Fredericks. “We have some quality athletes that are competing well and pushing each other to improve. Our season will come down to remaining healthy and building team pride and unity.”
Top returnees for the Blue Streaks include junior Marshall Happ, who qualified for the state track meet last season in the 1600-meter run; sophomore sprinter, hurdler and jumper Scott Rausch; senior Antwane Mace, who specializes in the 400; and sophomore sprinter and shot-putter Mike Liedtke.
Top newcomers this year include athletes coming over from other successful WHS sports teams: freshman runner Phil Meyer, junior jumper Nate Burns, junior hurdler and jumper Justin Drawz, junior sprinter and pole-vaulter Zach Shannon, junior sprinter Tyler Gillespie, senior sprinter and jumper Arthur Johnson, senior thrower Justin Kaspryk, senior thrower Pellumb Halili, senior sprinter and jumper Roy Mwale and senior sprinter Tyler Voss.
Other strong teams in the FVC are Jacobs High School and Huntley High School, though there is stiff competition throughout the conference in many areas.
On the girls’ side, head coach Steve Erwin has his team ready to go.
The girls finished seventh in the FVC last season and are hungry to improve on that in 2008.
“I think that we can be in the hunt this year,” said Erwin. “I’m really excited about the blend of the new talent with the experienced.”
The top returnees for the girls include senior high jumper and sprinter Jackie Weith; junior sprinter, pole-vaulter and hurdler Lisa Kucharski; sophomore distance runner Elise Beattie; junior sprinter Lauren Hunt; and senior sprinter Allyson Caldwell.
Top newcomers, much like the new boys, come from other successful WHS teams such as cross country and basketball: freshman distance runner Kayla Beattie, freshman sprinter Odessa Peters, freshman sprinter Lauren Flood, sophomore sprinter Sharon Mwale and senior sprinter Andrea Ramirez.
Both the boys and girls teams open the season Friday, March 21, at the Whitewater Invitational.
