Lightning prediction systems are in service
The lightning prediction systems were installed in two of the city’s parks in April, bringing the total number of municipal systems to three. A new base system was installed at Sullivan Field in Emricson Park with a remote system at the aquatic center, and a system was installed at Bates Park. Signs have been placed at the locations to notify users that a system is in place, and it includes basic information about what a warning means. It is important to seek shelter anytime lightning is a threat, even if a signal has not been sounded.
The systems will sound a 15-second horn blast when lightning is predicted. When this occurs, all activities should be suspended immediately, and people should seek shelter in a large building or automobile. At the same time, a strobe light will begin flashing and remain flashing until safe conditions are detected. Activities can be resumed only after three five-second blasts of the horn are sounded, and the strobe light stops flashing. A lightning prediction system has been in place at the Davis Road Soccer Complex since the opening of the soccer fields in spring 2007.

Police announce May traffic initiative
The Woodstock Police Department will engage in a Special Enforcement Initiative targeting seat belt violators this month. The enforcement effort is intended to educate motorists, and thereby reduce the number of personal injuries that occur during crashes because of unrestrained vehicle occupants. Officers will adopt a zero tolerance for restraint violations during the special traffic enforcement initiative and will seek to educate motorists by thoroughly explaining the violation and the consequences of noncompliance.
Friday, May 16, will mark the beginning of the nationwide “Click It or Ticket” campaign. The Woodstock Police Department will participate in the campaign.
Data from the traffic enforcement initiative will be carefully recorded and compiled, and Police Chief Robert Lowen will make the results known to the public.
