John K. Tornow

John K. “Bud” Tornow, 86, died Sept. 1, 2012, at Fraser Meadows Health Care Center, Boulder, Colo.

He was born Dec. 29, 1925, in Hartland to John F. and Mame (Selchow) Tornow. 

He graduated from Woodstock High School in 1943.

He served in the United States Army Air Corps during WWII as a flight radio operator. He was honorably discharged July 9, 1946.

On Aug. 16, 1958, he married Janet M. “Jan” Locke in Woodstock.

He was a skilled carpenter and had several of his homes featured on Woodstock’s Holiday House Walk. In 1969, he moved his family to Colorado, where he continued designing and building homes until he retired.

He was a devoted husband, loving father and a man of deep faith in God. He was very proud of his family and enjoyed involving his daughters with his work in carpentry. He also enjoyed playing sports and attending and watching sport events, attending jazz concerts and picnicking in the mountains. He and his wife welcomed countless children, friends and neighbors into their home. His legacy is all those whose lives he touched.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Teri Tornow, Longmont, Colo., and Cindy (Todd) Tayler, Frederick, Colo.; two sisters, Joyce (Don) Perkins,Woodstock, and  Joanne (Jim) Rizzo, Minocqua, Wis.; two brothers-in-law, James R. Locke, Woodstock,  and Edward T. Locke, Volo; many nieces and nephews; a chosen child, Kelly (Floyd) Butts; and three grandsons Michael, Jesse and Samuel.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Betty Tornow Freund.

A memorial service was Sept. 8 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Longmont. 

Arrangements were made by Ahlberg Funeral Chapel, Longmont.
