Roundabout Construction to Close Parts of Raffel, Charles

Detours will be in effect from May 30 to mid-August

Construction of a roundabout in rural Woodstock will shut down parts of two roads later this month.

The intersection of Charles and Raffel roads will be closed to traffic beginning Tuesday, May 30, for crews to install a single-lane roundabout, according to a press release from the McHenry County Division of Transportation. Some preliminary construction began May 15.

Traffic along Raffel Road will be redirected to Banford and Queen Anne roads, while Charles Road traffic will be detoured to Routes 120 and 47.

The intersection is expected to open to traffic by mid-August. The entire roundabout project should be completed by mid-September, according to McDOT.

On Raffel Road, the work zone stretches from just north of Woodstock North High School past the intersection of Charles Road. On Charles Road, the work zone is confined to the area surrounding the intersection with Raffel Road.

The intersection is classified as a “Five Percent Location,” meaning a high number of dangerous traffic accidents occur there, according to McDOT.

In April, the McHenry County Board approved a $2,183,549.98  contract with Huntley’s Landmark Contractors to build the roundabout.
