G. Mitchell 'Mike' Kane, 94, Belleville

G. Mitchell “Mike” Kane, 94, Belleville, died Sunday, July 10, 2016, at St. Paul’s Senior Community, Belleville.

He was born May 14, 1922, to Earl and Luella (Mitchell) Kane in Diamond Lake. 

He was married for 62 years to his only love, Florence (Kmet) Kane, who died in 2006. They lived in Diamond Lake, Ringwood and Richmond, then in Mequon, Wis., and finally Mt. Vernon from 1994 to 2016. 

He was a 1943 graduate of the University of Illinois College of Agriculture. 

His vocational passion was agricultural. A 4-H and Future Farmers of America member in his youth, he started his working life as a dairy farmer and ended his career in agricultural lending in Woodstock. 

He was actively involved in the life of his communities. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Mt. Vernon and its Pioneer Club, Chowder Club and King City Dinner Club, the Mount Vernon Tree Board and the Jefferson County Agricultural Business Club, among others. He served on county fair boards in McHenry County and Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, as well as the McHenry County and Mequon City planning commissions. He also served on the Mequon City Council and the Solon Mills School Board.

Survivors include four children, Nancy (Reed) Hannebaum, Belleville, Kathy, Menlo Park, Calif., George (Kathy), Columbus, Ohio, and Lawrence (Karla), Brimfield; seven grandchildren, Ben Hall, Matt (Brittany) Hall, Danica Kane (Zach Fredin), Mitchell Kane, DeWitt Kane, Sara Kane and Erica Kane; two brothers, Roland, McAlpin, Fla., and Melvin (Betty), Ruffin, S.C.; two sisters-in-law, Virginia Strukel and Gail Kane; many nieces and nephews; and special friends Doc and Roy at GreenTree in Mount Vernon.

The funeral was July 13 at Hughey Funeral Home, Mount Vernon, with burial at Oakwood Cemetery.

Memorials can be made to Angels on Assignment at First United Methodist Church of Mt. Vernon.
