Leo F. Carvis, 94, Woodstock

Leo F. Carvis, 94, Woodstock, formerly of Waukegan, died Saturday, March 19, 2016, at JourneyCare Hospice Center, Woodstock.

He was born March 5, 1922, to Leo S. and Severine Carroll (Malacina) Carvis in Chicago. 

On Sept. 15, 1951, he married Nancy Lorraine Vitala.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, stationed in France and England. 

He worked for the Lake County Sheriff’s Department for 23 years, reaching the rank of lieutenant before retiring. He had a lifelong love of music, serving as president of the American Federation of Musicians and playing the saxophone and clarinet in many bands in the area. He was a proud member of the McHenry County Enterprise Club, the VFW and the American Legion. He enjoyed aviation, had his pilot’s license and enjoyed playing golf.

Survivors include two sons, Timothy (Julie) Carvis and Robert (Diana) Carvis; a daughter, Barbara Carvis Jutila; two grandchildren, Amy Carvis and Robert John Carvis; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife;  a brother, James A. Carvis; a sister, Dorothy Rifenbary; and a son-in-law, Gerald D. Jutila.

Visitation was March 21 at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock. The funeral Mass was March 22 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Woodstock. Burial was at Ascension Cemetery, Libertyville.
