Fight at Wedding Reception Leads to Slashing ArrestEdit Module
A quarrel at a wedding reception in Harvard spilled over into a Woodstock hotel’s parking lot when a man allegedly slashed someone with a broken beer bottle, causing him serious injuries.
Jeffrey D. Kerley, 31, Elgin, was arrested after Woodstock Police said he left a 27-year-old Glendale Heights man with a deep laceration to his upper chest and lower neck area.
Kerley allegedly lunged at and struck the man with glass from a broken bottle during a fight just before midnight July 7 outside Best Western Woodstock Inn, 990 Lake Ave.
Both men were guests at a wedding in Harvard and had been shuttled to the Woodstock hotel after the reception ended, according to a press release from the Woodstock Police Department. Police said the men were involved in a verbal argument at the reception that continued when they arrived at the hotel. A physical fight then broke out in the parking lot of Best Western, according to police.
When officers arrived on the scene, they found a large crowd of people “who were in a heightened, agitated state,” the press release said.
The Glendale Heights man was bleeding profusely from the cut to his neck. He was treated by Woodstock Fire/Rescue District crews before being flown with life-threatening injuries to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, police said.
After police spoke with witnesses, Kerley was arrested and transported to the Woodstock Police Department. He was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, a Class 3 felony. He was transported to the McHenry County Jail, where he was released July 8 after posting bond.
At press time, the victim remained in the hospital. Kerley is due in court July 25.
