Barbara Susan Scibetta

Barbara Susan Scibetta, 63, Woodstock, died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014, at Cancer Treatment Center in Zion.

She was born Sept. 25, 1951, to Miriam Norman and Miriam (McDermott) Scibetta in Elgin.

On March 20, 1977, she married Scott Offord, whom she met when they were students at Northern Illinois University.

She was proud of her Irish and Italian heritage, and she kept her family name when she was married.

The couple enjoyed traveling, walking and bicycling with each other and their friends. They were active members of the McHenry County Bicycle Club. She learned to swim in order to compete in the Crystal Lake Triathlon in 1984. Their family traveled to Ireland in 1997.

She loved music and took up the guitar late in life. She valued education and continued to pursue knowledge. She was a lifetime Girl Scout. She was a feminist who tirelessly advocated on behalf of women’s rights. She spent her adult life searching for a spiritual home and found it among the members of St. Ann’s Episcopal Church.

She was diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer in 2008 and worked hard to regain vigor as she dealt with multiple major surgeries and chemotherapy. She refused to let cancer take her zest for life.
