Robert E. “Bob” Kies Jr., 75

Robert E. “Bob” Kies Jr., 75, Woodstock, died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013, at Rockford Memorial Hospital.

He was born May 30, 1938, in Dubuque, Iowa, to Robert and Virginia (Turner) Kies.
On Nov. 11, 1961, he married Anne Marie Stapleton in Hinsdale.
He graduated from Loras Academy and the University of Dubuque. He was a veteran, serving in the U.S. Army Reserves.
He was a teacher and coached basketball, golf, football and baseball at Hempstead High School in Dubuque from 1971 to 1974.  He also worked at Beloit Catholic High School and Johnsburg High School.
He was a teacher, athletic director and basketball coach at Quincy Notre Dame High School from 1981 to 1996.  While at Quincy, he led the basketball team to 157 wins in eight seasons; and he coached the boys golf team to five state tournament appearances.  He helped create the QND Hall of Fame in 1991, and was inducted himself in 2012.
Other accomplishments include winning the state basketball championship with Beloit Catholic in 1977; he was named Illinois High School State Athletic Director of the Year in 1995; and he was inducted into the Illinois Golf Coaches Hall of Fame in 1995.
He was the athletic director at Marian Central Catholic High School, Woodstock, from 1996 until his retirement.
Survivors include his five children, Kathie (Scott) Sembach, Spring Grove, Jennifer (Dan) Nelson, Florissant, Mo., Cynthia (Mike) Elsbury, Byron, Dan (Amerika) Kies, Burlington, Iowa, and Jon (Robin) Kies, Quincy; 15 grandchildren, Megan (Michael) Menne, Aimee Nelson, Dustin Elsbury, George Nelson, Caitlin Sembach, Nicholas Elsbury, Corie Sembach, Jacob Elsbury, Brandon Elsbury, Gavin Kies, Tyler Elsbury, Kayleigh Sembach, Dylan Kies, Griffin Kies and Lauren Kies; a sister, Judy Wand; three brothers-in-law, Edward F. (MaryCarol) Stapleton, Robert (Margie) Stapleton and Jerry (Mary Jean) Stapleton;  two sisters-in-law, Kathleen (Donald) VaVerka and Maureen (Dick) Hammond; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife July 25, 2011; a sister, Barbara Olson Bartman;  two brothers-in-law, Gail Olson and Don Wand; and a sister-in-law, Karen Stapleton.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, in Woodstock and will continue from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Dec. 18, at the funeral home. The funeral Mass will be held at 1 p.m. Dec. 18 at  St. Patrick Church, 15012 St. Patrick Road, Woodstock.  The Rev. Doyle will officiate.  Interment will be private in St. Patrick Cemetery.
