Dr. Frank J. Johnson, 100, Formerly of Woodstock

Dr. Frank Richard Johnson, 100, Frankfort, formerly of Hinsdale and Woodstock, died Saturday, July 30, 2016, at the Homesteader, Benzonia, Mich.

He completed his undergraduate work at Beloit College and the University of Chicago and earned a medical degree from Northwestern University School of Medicine. Honoring a commitment to the U. S. Navy, he served as an officer in the Navy Medical Corp during the Korean Conflict, serving aboard the USS Buckner, USS Greely and heavy cruiser USS Los Angeles. Upon separation from the Navy in 1954, he settled with his family and established his pediatric surgical practice in Hinsdale.

He served as attending physician at several Chicago-area hospitals including Rush Presbyterian St. Luke, Children’s Memorial, LaGrange Memorial and Hinsdale. He was a fellow in the American College of Surgeons and the American Academy of Pediatric Surgeons. He was a Charter Fellow in the American Pediatric Surgery Association.

He enjoyed many years in northern Wisconsin on Lac Vieux Desert as a young man and during retirement.

Survivors include a daughter, Christine Johnson Kramer, and her children, Timothy S. and Thomas W. Kramer; a son, Joel Pierce Johnson (Jennifer Coleman Johnson) and their children, Kiersten and Coleman Johnson; a daughter, Katherine Anne Johnson Sunier (Richard Joseph Sunier) and their children, Jessica, Leisa and Richard Sunier Jr.; and three great-grandchildren, Willa Kramer, Simon Kramer and Annie Kramer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife of 67 years, Mary Elizabeth.

An inurnment will be held at a later date at Grace Episcopal Church in Hinsdale.

Donations can be made in his name to a charity of the donor’s choice.
