On the Woodstock Square, cars for a cause

The former Kroozers Cars for Kids car show will return to the Woodstock Square once again this year from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, under the new name of Woodstock on the Square Car Show.

Cruisers of Northern Illinois and the McHenry County Youth Services Bureau were the organizers of the show for 15 years. Though there was talk of canceling the event this year, a group of volunteers from the community stepped up to ensure the show would go on.

“We just couldn’t let it cancel,” said volunteer Deb Kline.

“It’s a guaranteed fundraiser – the Square packs every time.”Volunteer Karl Nielson will show his antique truck at the Aug. 18 event.

All proceeds from the car show will benefit Pioneer Center for Human Services, with donations to groups such as McHenry County Pads, the Youth Service Bureau, Children’s Center for Autism, Mental Illness, and Developmental Disabilities and Voice Sexual Assault Services.

“We chose the Pioneer Center this year because they took a large intake of Family Services Clients [after the organization closed down],” said Kline.

“Pioneer Center is a great, great organization.  A lot of people out there need help right now.”

A total of 50 volunteers, who Kline described as a bunch of friends and neighbors, will be organizing the event this year. Between 1,000 and 2,000 people are expected to attend.

More than 360 cars will be featured and will compete for 30 trophies, including a Best of Show.

Entertainment will include disc jockey “Double J,” an opportunity to test drive a Harley in a Woodstock Harley-Davidson “Jump Start” activity, a silent auction, a photo op with Danny and Sandy from the movie “Grease” sponsored by Seasons by Peg, and a 50/50 drawing and raffles – one prize will include a Chicago Bears football autographed by Jay Cutler.

Food vendors will be onsite. Vendors this year will include Dairy Queen, Pops Premier Kettle Corn, and the Lions Club, which will offer barbecues and hot dogs. Pioneer Services clients will sell bottled water for $1.

Alliance Contractors Inc., Woodstock Marathon, Niko’s Red Mill, Woodstock Walmart, Miller-Midwestern Die Co., McHenry Specialities, Don Hansen’s Alignment & Auto Service, Jones Country Meats and Woodstock Moose Lodge #1329 are some of the local sponsors.

Kline said she hopes for a beautiful night on the Square with lots of fun and entertainment for the community.

“This show is one of the best attended, because everyone loves the beauty of the Square … We’ve had so many cars in the past, we’ve had to turn some down,” she said.

There will be a $15 registration fee at the gate.

Raffle tickets and 50/50 drawing will be available for $1 each or six for $5.
